Will, on his holiday, is polishing trucks and tomorrow he'll teach me how to blacken tyres to make them 'look brand new'. Hope he doesn't think I will transfer the knowledge and start doing it at home! Working in this area means we are working indoors, no sunburn, no wind blowing a gale, however we are on our own, so chat with others has to wait till happy hour.
The Kenworth boss was impressed when he arrived to find Will at the top of a ladder dusting the roof of a truck. He may not have been so impressed if he'd arrived earlier to find one of the bonnets open and the cleaner standing 'inside' the engine to reach the high spots.
Will is enjoying chatting to the visitors who ask about the trucks. I made sure to listen to a number of the videos that were playing so I sounded slightly more informed - this centre was opened in August '05, Kenworths are made in both Australia and America, the 2014 truck was donated by Kenworth etc etc.
The first truck Will polished was a log truck, it made me wonder about the log trucks Dad used to load. What make were they? What about my uncle's stock crate? What type of truck did he favour? So much we don't take notice of when the people with the answers are nearby, it's only as we age that we start to wonder.
A highlight each day is happy hour around the camp fire where you catch up with where fellow volunteers have visited or worked for the day. Simpson's Gap was a popular destination today so we might pop that on the to do list. Happy hour starts around 5pm and goes til about 8pm, or whenever you get hungry and have to go back to cook. As ours is the closest van I can pop the pork chops on, smell when they need to be turned, pop over to the van, take care of them and pop the pre-organised veggies on before returning for more conversation and laughs around the camp fire.
We were chatting about the van tonight and I mentioned the canomatic can opener. Gail, who is just hilarious asked 'But do you have any lime green Tupperware?' I proudly answered 'The whole set!' which sent her into convulsions of laughter. She's very jealous and told Will unequivocally that he cannot EVER sell the van! My thoughts exactly!!
